A US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel on Thursday voted against a proposal to allow for the sale of the drug "Viagra" and to ban the sale of its generic form. That vote, made up of a majority of votes cast in favor of the drug, comes after the FDA warned the drug could be in short supply as early as the second week of June.
Dr. John P. Leech, a clinical pharmacology professor at George Washington University, said the drug should be "discontinued and/or removed from retail stores for safety reasons."
In the advisory, which voted down the drug's safety risks, FDA director Margaret Hamburg, the agency's commissioner, said the agency's action on the drug could have "significant health risks and a limited regulatory authority over drug safety."
The agency has said it is reviewing the advisory and determining whether it would be necessary to change the drug's form for patients who could not swallow the pills. It will take up the effort within a few weeks, according to a statement from the agency.
